There's A Right Way And A Wrong Way

...To Swap Out A Transmission

Raising the vehicle

The first step is to raise the vehicle, remove the oil drain plug, run the engine at full speed to eject transmission fluid and remove all bolts around the cowling. The second step is to apply pressure to the emergency brake until the transmission drops free.

Cleaning the transmission pan

Once you have the transmission removed from the vehicle, place the pan on your shop bench. Also, you may have to remove the exhaust system first as it may be blocking access to the transmission. If this is the case, you would know by now. That's the good thing.

Removing the transmission

Please note that all of these instructions may not be in the order that your particular vehicle requires. For instance, some vehicles require the oil to be left in the transmission before disconnecting the drive shaft. This will be obvious as you proceed.
